you real names because it'd be unfair to show up the
poor guy who didn't launch successfully. These two
guys are both on my newsletter lists, so in order
to write this page factually, I was able to speak

Both
of them released their album in July this year. A
few days apart, but no major events coincided with
either of them.
The
first person... the only promotion of his album was
in the four weeks prior to his launch (four weeks
is not good enough). During this four weeks, he sent
out one press release that simply said he was launching
an album (that's not how you send out a release!)
which resulted in nothing, and he emailed his friends
to let him know (if you want more sales, telling just
your friends won't do!). When launch day came around,
all he did was put up a banner saying he's offering
his CD for £2 less than the normal price. That
was his offer.
I
bet you can see now why this guy only sold 17 CDs
on his launch day. (Actually, I think 17 is pretty
good considering what he did...)
Onto
the next guy... his album launch had 4 months worth
of promotion behind it. Not particularly about the
new album, but about himself. Getting people to taste
existing music and subscribe to his free newsletter.
He was getting the word out. He was
playing gigs and getting people talking about him.
He played a more than average number of gigs just
for this short period.
He
used his friends to promote to their networks and
so forth. He devoted time and trust into his work,
knowing it'll work. His list had 7500 musicians come
launch day. He sold 967 CDs - that's more
than brilliant for a 7500 list. He built
up trust and a strong relationship with most of his
subscribers and his launch day special deal was irresistible.

I
think the question to ask you now is:

It's
a funny ol' story. Here at the office, we hear of
it every week through the e-mails we receive, the

in L.A. manages to sell less than 25 CDs on the launch

then, he suffers a major shock, frustration
and setback and his confidence drops.

record launch didn't go as they anticipated, or at
least wished for it to go. They didn't get the promotion
they desired in the week of the launch. They didn't
have enough people to promote the CD too. They didn't
make their money.
